Beschrijving van de inhoud

2004 is een Olympisch jaar – en al hebben de moderne Olympische Spelen niets uit te staan met ta Olumpia, de Olympische Spelen van de Oudheid, toch is natuurlijk weer bij herhaling verwezen naar die Oudheid, zeker nu de Spelen in Griekenland plaatsvonden. Wat waren de antieke spelen wél? In de Oudheid werden sportwedstrijden, agônes, niet alleen in Olumpia georganiseerd, maar ook in vele andere plaatsen. En niet alleen sportwedstrijden waren in de Griekse wereld wijdverspreid, ook allerhande andere competities, eveneens agônes geheten, met name in de musische kunsten, van lierspel tot en met toneelspel. Wat direct opvalt aan al deze wedstrijden in van alles en nog wat, is dat ze, voorzover ze van een ‘officieel’ karakter zijn, zonder uitzondering plaatsvinden in een religieuze context, dat wil zeggen in of bij een heiligdom, ter gelegenheid van een religieus feest, en ter ere van de goden. In dit werkcollege zal gepoogd worden de wirwar aan bekende wedstrijden in kaart te brengen: zijn daar, naar tijd en plaats, bepaalde patronen in te ontwaren? Verder zal de vraag centraal staan wat er nu precies religieus is aan deze wedstrijden: of bevinden deze zich min of meer ‘toevallig’ in een religieuze context?
